Indian Railways' first solar power plant

A 1.7-MW solar photovoltaic plant has been commissioned by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) at Bina, Madhya Pradesh for the Indian Railways.

Electricity will be supplied directly to the traction system of Indian Railways through this plant.

The plant was commissioned after the Indian Railways decided to become self-sufficient for its electricity requirement and had plans to solarize railway stations using the vacant land for various renewable energy projects.

This is the first such solar power plant commissioned on the Indian Railways network to feed traction power directly.

This solar plant commissioned at Bina is spread over an area of more than ten acres. In this solar plant, 5800 solar modules have been installed on 145 sets of modular mounting structure on 1015 pile foundation.

The electricity generated from this plant will be provided free of cost to the Indian Railways.

This solar plant is expected to generate 8 MU of electricity every year.

This solar plant will save 2,160 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Plan to use solar energy to power railway stations

In the Union Budget 2017-18, it was announced that solar power would be used to power around 7,000 railway stations across the country in the medium term.

The government had announced in the budget that 2,000 railway stations would be built under its 1000 MW solar project.

Indian Railways' objective of becoming a net zero carbon emission rail network will be accelerated by the use of solar energy. To achieve this, Indian Railways had developed a plan to set up 20 GW capacity solar power plants by 2030 using its vacant land.
